Governance

To help ensure that strategic issues relating to ESG are appropriately identified and managed across the firm in the best interest of our clients, we established an ESG Steering Committee during 2021 consisting of several members of our Executive Committee and senior representatives responsible for ESG activities within our Distribution and Investment teams. Under this committee, individual initiatives have been created to ensure that the ESG operating model within Investments continues to evolve, our funds and mandates respect emerging regulation pertaining to ESG, and there is sufficient awareness of the firm’s activities relating to CSR. Our commitment to good corporate governance is held to the highest standards by our Board of Directors and our stakeholders and is evident in our practices and our policies, within which we explain how we act with integrity and honesty.

Responsible investing

We believe that ESG integration can help protect and enhance value, further our and our clients’ goals and empower our investment teams to develop their own distinct approach for their asset class and client base. Janus Henderson supports ESG integration through a framework that includes a wide range of tools and shared resources as well as appropriate risk management and controls. These measures are designed to ensure investment teams are aware of ESG risks and opportunities in order to meet our client’s requirements and maximise long-term, risk adjusted returns and positive outcomes for our clients. Our approach reinforces our belief that ESG factors are critical ingredients for long-term business success. In addition, as part of our commitment to responsible investment, Janus Henderson is affiliated with a wide range of ESG-related initiatives as a member, supporter or in an advisory capacity.

Environment

In 2021 we met our 3-year environmental targets to reduce our carbon footprint by 15% per full-time employee (FTE). In 2022 we set new 5-year targets in line with guidance from the Science Based Target Initiative for 29.4% for Scope 1 (fuel) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions, and 17.5% for Scope 3 (business travel, hotel stays, freight, paper consumption, water, waste) emissions. We have also set intensity targets of 17.5% reduction on both waste and water per FTE. To measure our progress, we collect carbon data on a quarterly basis and review our performance in line with our targets.



In addition to this, we have maintained a CarbonNetural® certification since 2007 and offset all our operational emissions yearly. Through this process, we have invested in a variety of offset projects around the world, delivering financial support to essential renewable energy, forestry and resource conservation projects that support reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. All projects we support have been classified as ‘additional’ by an independent third party, meaning that they would not happen without the sale of carbon credits.

We believe it’s important for our employees to be actively engaged in the global community in which we operate through charitable giving and volunteering. Such service builds an employee culture that attracts and retains the best talent, extends the Janus Henderson brand and serves the communities where we operate. Through the Janus Henderson Foundation, we are able to invest in innovative educational programmes that will educate, empower and develop the next generation around the world as well as support global charities about which our employees are passionate.
